What Makes This a Photo of the Day? I find this tableau to be hauntingly beautiful, from the smoothed waves to the ghostlike figures in the surf. I get the feeling of time passing as the waves roll in, first carrying pieces of the ship ashore, then ultimately erasing the entire scene. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor

Story behind:

think this image describes Haiti the best, it shows the beauty that I saw shortly after I arrived there and inevitably fall in love with.

On November 7th, 2011 I was working in Jérémie,Haiti.

I witnessed a group of local men as they were jumping into the ocean and swimming through waves towards a boat that was stuck on a reef.
These men were using the waves to bring pieces of the boat back to the shore and reuse the materials for shelter and other purposes.

Even chaotic situations can be shown with dignity and beauty.
